10 Guidelines to Follow When Repainting Your Toronto House

Nov 29, 2023

Breathe new life into your home's tired walls with fresh new paint colours. Painting the house doesn’t have to be an arduous task. With the proper techniques, products, tools, and supplies, it can be a fun experience with long-lasting results.

Keep reading to learn ten tips when repainting your Toronto house.

What’s the Difference Between Matte, Satin, and Gloss?

Tip #1: Prepare the Surface

Preparing the surface properly will yield better results in your painting project:

  • Remove outlet and switch covers, registers and grills, and picture-hanging hardware.
  • Inspect the intended paint area for cracks, dents, or holes.
  • Use a spackling compound and fill imperfections with a putty knife; allow to dry completely.
  • Use a fine sandpaper to smooth the area flush with the surface.
  • Wipe the repair area clean and ensure the rest of the surface is free of dirt, dust, and grime.

Tip #2: Use High-Quality Paint and Tools

While you may consider saving money by buying a cheaper, lower-quality paint, know that lower-quality paint won’t apply as smoothly, cover as well, or last as long, so you’ll be repainting the house sooner. High-qualityBenjamin Moore Paint will make painting the home easier and last for years to come.

The right tools can help you achieve professional-looking results with less mess and frustration. Save time and disappointment by investing in high-quality rollers, brushes, painter’s tape and other paint supplies in Toronto.

Tip #3: Protect Furniture and Flooring

There are several different types of drop cloths available, and choosing the right one depends on your needs:

  • Plastic: These are lightweight, waterproof, and perfect for protecting carpets. They’re also disposable, which makes cleanup easier and faster.
  • Canvas: This type of drop cloth is excellent for protecting hardwood floors and furniture. Its durable and heavy-duty construction makes it a reusable option that can last for years.
  • Paper and plastic sheeting: This option can cover large areas and is also a popular choice in conjunction with painter’s tape for covering windows, cabinets, and countertops.

Tip #4: Start with a Primer

Priming your surfaces can increase paint adhesion, cover minor flaws and stains, improve sheen, and produce a uniform finish.

  • If you plan on painting over an existing oil-based paint or a glossy finish with latex paint, use a primer for better adhesion.
  • Drywall, wood, and masonry surfaces are porous and will absorb your paint, requiring more coats than if you had used a primer first.
  • Save on material costs using primer — the primer cost is typically less than paint.
  • A coat of primer can cover dark colours and provide a neutral surface for a lighter paint colour to revitalize your room.

Tip #5: Apply Paint in Thin, Even Coats

Applying paint in thin, even layers is key to a smooth finish that won’t chip, drip, or flake. Avoid overloading your roller or brush, and allow the recommended dry time between coats.

Tip #6: Use a Brush or Roller Appropriate for the Surface

A brush and a roller both have benefits. Here are some factors to consider when working with a brush:

  • Polyester and nylon brushes work well with latex or water-based paints
  • Natural brushes are better for varnishes, stains, and oil-based paints
  • Better for doors, trims, edges, corners, and any smaller detailed areas
  • Offers more control than a roller
  • Can create a textured look if desired

Here are some things to consider when using a paint roller:

  • Ideal for large areas like ceilings, walls, and large cabinets
  • Can hold much more paint than brushes
  • You can distribute even layers of paint faster
  • Rollers can have different surface types for producing different finishes:
  • A fluffy, thick roller will create a textured finish
  • A smooth, thin roller will create a smooth finish

Tip #7: Take Your Time and Be Patient

Trying to go too fast typically leads to uneven colour distribution, visible brush and roller marks, and drips — a perfectionist’s nightmare. Use controlled strokes to apply the paint evenly and allow the recommended drying time before adding coats.

Tip #8: Clean Your Brushes and Rollers After Each Use

You must clean your rollers and brushes after every painting session. This excludes waiting for your paint to dry in between coats. However, you can wrap your brush or roller with plastic wrap to stop it from drying out between coats or if you take an extended break.

When you’re done painting for the day, start your cleanup by removing any excess paint from the brush or roller. For brushes, simply run the brush along the edge of the paint can and for rollers, use a putty knife to scrape the paint back into the can. Save the paint from your roller tray using a brush to minimize what gets left behind.

If you’re using latex paint, wash all your supplies with warm, soapy water in the sink, whereas oil-based paints require mineral spirits.

Tip #9: Allow Proper Drying Time Between Coats

There are general drying times for various paints, so you should always follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for best results. For example, exterior, interior, and ceiling paints typically dry in one hour and are ready for re-coat in two hours.
